Barnesville, Ohio. . .The annual Dickinson Cattle Co. Fall Fling educational cattle field day was held to assist registered cattle producers to be more profitable. The ranch known for registered Texas Longhorn production and international export holds frequent seminars at the ranch headquarters north of Barnesville, Ohio. This year's one day program for clients and guests was attended by 140 people from 7 states.
The topics included, branding demonstrations, with a squeeze chute and without, bloodless castration, and a report on cloning methods of high quality cattle. The feature presentation was designed to assist ranchers to develop their own meat sales business. In the cattle business each sale is wholesale until the final product is on the meat counter, then it becomes a retail product. Those in attendance were encouraged to sell retail, high value lean meat products on a farm market system. Every cattle owner was encouraged to develop a retail meat business no matter how small their herd.
All present were encouraged to oppose the voluntary/mandated USDA computer numbering system called NAIS. Although the USDA has spent $84,000,000 promoting the program, farmers are reluctant to surrender their farms to total government observation, followed by costly numbering of all farm animals.
During the day buses toured the ranch to entertain guests and inform about unique championship bloodlines and special values of the ranch's three breeds Texas Longhorn, Dutch Buelingo and African Watusi. The next Fall Fling field day is planned for October 6, 2007.
